Coastal ecosystems and landscapes are increasingly altered by the construction of human-made structures. According to the initial analysis undertaken in the scope of the GEF Adriatic project, at least 14.47% of the coastal length of Albania is artificial. The main source of plastic pollution along the Adriatic and Ionian Sea comes from hotels, restaurants, cafes, and touristic cruise who heavily rely on cost-effective, convenient, functional, and customer-appreciated single-use plastic products such as straws, cups, bags, and toiletries. Both Kune Vain and Sazani Islands are part of protected areas. Kune Vain is within the Kune-Vain-Tale Nature Reserve, while Sazani Island has been designated a protected area due to its military and ecological significance.Sazani and Kune Vain Islands, like many tourist destinations, contains considerable use of SUPs such as bottles, bags, and food packaging, particularly from visitors and nearby HORECA (Hotels, Restaurants, and Cafés).
