WB economies are considered medium to highly vulnerable to climate change, because of the relatively high percentage of population employed in weather and climate related sectors, such as agriculture. Extreme weather events, such as heat waves, frost, or heavy rainfall during critical phenological stages of the plants will be a growing challenge for semi-arid rural areas in the Balkan region. This will also influence soil health, fertility, and structure for sustainable agricultural and environmental outcomes. Modern precision irrigation techniques and precision agriculture approaches can contribute to more efficient use of intermediate production inputs, however the uptake of drip irrigation and precision agriculture is lacking both awareness and capacity building provision among farming communities.
