The Municipality of Patos currently does not have a circular economy program that fits the Law on Waste Management in Schools. From a very preliminary assessment, every day about 0.09 kg of waste is produced by each student. Referring to reference studies, the typology composition of waste streams in schools is organic (29%), paper (29%), plastic (18%), glass (4%), aluminum (13%) and textile (5%).
Currently, the waste separation and recycling process does not take place in these schools, as all the collected waste goes to the municipal bins and is further disposed of. This brings a high cost to citizens who have to pay for the removal of waste from the territory. Also, the waste collection infrastructure in these schools is not in a very good condition.
The project “Circular Economy in Schools” aims to promote a new form of waste management in schools through education and concrete investments in waste infrastructure.
